The cruiser Tone, sister ship to Chikuma, was laid down by Mitsubishi on December 1, 1934 and completed on November 20, 1938. Her specification was the same as that of her sister ship. She operated with Chikuma in undertaking reconnaissance for the First Air Fleet on December 7. She fought in the Leyte Gulf in October 1944 and was put out of action during the American raids on the Inland Sea, July 24-28, 1945.
