The destroyer Schley was a Flush Deck Type, 5th Group, laid down at Union Iron Works on 29 October 1917 and completed on 20 September 1918. Her displacement was 1,000 tons, her length 315 feet overall and her beam 31 feet. She was armed with six 3-inch guns, two anti-aircraft machine-guns and six torpedo tubes. On 7 December she was moored alongside Ramapo at the Navy Yard.
