Lieutenant Ruff, Lawrence E.

Lieutenant Ruff was not on board the battleship Nevada when the Japanese attack began because he had gone with Father Drinnan to the hospital ship Solace to attend mass. While there he heard firing and a noise "like a powerful and heavy wind blowing through foliage." Looking out he saw Arizona on fire. Ruff made a swift return in a launch to his ship, under fire from Japanese aircraft, and took position in the conning tower and established communication with Lieutenant Commander Francis J. Thomas (Thomas, Francis J.) at his battle station below decks. Together they made the attempt to take Nevada to sea.
