Captain Rood, George

The captain of the cruiser St Louis, George Rood, was the only skipper to get a capital ship out of Pearl Harborduring the Japanese Second Attack Wave. By 0931 she was on the move. Approaching the narrows between Ford Island and the Navy Yard, Rood realized a dredger cable might foul his propellers and ordered "Emergency Full" to get maximum speed. St Louis sliced through the cable. The same order was given to avoid torpedoes when she was in the harbor entrance channel. Rood saved another ship later that day when sent in search of Japanese ships off the south west of Oahu. He recognized the reported enemy as Minneapolis and held his fire.
