The destroyer tender Rigel was moored at the Navy Yard next to the hammerhead crane on 7 December. When the attack hit Pearl Harbor two of Rigel's launches were sent to rescue survivors. Launch 1 was commanded by Ensign Charles Hake and took more than 50 men from West Virginia from the water, running great risks of becoming engulfed in burning oil. Launch 2 under Ensign James Biena was just pulling away when a bomb passed through her, exploding on the harbor bottom and injuring her crew.
