The submarine tender Pelias was launched on 14 November 1939. She displaced 7,886 tons, was 492 feet long and 70 feet in the beam, drawing 29 feet. She had four 5-inch guns. On 7 December she was moored deep in the inlet on the north east of South-East Loch. Shortly after 1040 she opened fire on an aircraft and at 1125 another approached from ahead, her log records, and was struck by fire from Pelias and others. At this time there were no Japanese around.
