PT 23

A number of torpedo boats were on the dockside at the Navy Yard, packed in wooden cradles for loading on board the Ramapo for shipment to the Philippines. In spite of being out of their element, they joined the fight against the Japanese. On PT 23 Gunner's Mate First Class Joy De Jong (De Jong, Joy Van Zyll) and Torpedoman First Class George Huffman (Huffman, George) traversed their .50 caliber machine gun by hand to bring it to bear on incoming aircraft and claimed a kill.
