The P-40 Warhawk Army Air Force fighter was armed with six .50 caliber machine guns and was also capable of carrying a bomb under the fuselage or one under each wing. Top speed was 364 mph and range was 610 miles, or 1,200 miles with a belly tank. The P-40s of Second Lieutenants George S. Welch (Welch, George S.) and Kenneth M. Taylor (Taylor, Kenneth M., 47th Pursuit Squadron got airborne from Haleiwa Field and carry out attacks on the Japanese.
