The P-36A Curtiss Hawk was an Army Air Force fighter aircraft armed with a .50 caliber and three .30 caliber machine guns. It had a top speed of 323 mph and a range of 625 miles. On 7 December a group of P-36s took off under fire from Wheeler Field at 0850. Lieutenant Lewis Sanders (Sanders, Lewis) led them to attack 3rd Fighter Combat Unit which was over Kaneohe Naval Air Station.
