Lieutenant Nono, Sumio

The 4th Fighter Combat Unit from Hiryu was commanded by Lieutenant Nono. He had nine Mitsubishi A6M5 Zeros but one had engine problems on takeoff and returned to the carrier while the rest continued for Bellows Field Air Base. Lieutenant Hans Christiansen attempted to get into his P-40 assisted by 2nd Lieutenant Phillip Willis, but a strafing Zero killed the pilot, Willis surviving only because the parachute pack stopped the bullets. Lieutenants George Whiteman and Samuel Bishop attempted to take off, but Whiteman was hit on the runway and crashed while Bishop was shot down over the sea and swam ashore, wounded. All this was achieved by two Zeros assigned to deal with enemy aircraft. The remaining six Zeros then formed line ahead and shot up the airfield.
