Pearl Harbor is a great natural anchorage on the southern shore of Oahu somewhat like an inverted triangle, the apex to the south. From the base of the triangle, pointing south towards Ford Island in the middle of the harbor, projects the peninsula on which Pearl City stands, dividing the north of the anchorage into the larger area of East Loch and the smaller body of water to the west, Middle Loch. For all practical purposes in the context of December 1941, the slender finger of West Loch can be ignored. There were a number of moorings south west of Pearl City and north of the Waipio Peninsula, in the mouth of Middle Loch. Ships here on 7 December included Curtiss.
