Lieutenant "Matsumura, Hirata "

The 4th Torpedo Attack Unit from the carrier Hiryu, part of the First Attack Wave, was commanded by Lieutenant Matsumura flying a Nakajima B5N2 Kate. Their objective was the mooring to the west of Ford Island where he expected to see aircraft carriers, but there were only cruisers and the target ship Utah on which another pilot wasted a torpedo. Matsumura therefore sought a target to the east of the island. There he torpedoed West Virginia. On his way back to his ship he saw a B-17 but did not attempt to engage it as he was not equipped for air-to-air combat. He reported that recovery of the First Wave was completed by 1047 and that the Second Attack Wave was returning at 1130.
