The Hawaii Operation was undertaken by the First Air Fleet for which reconnaissance was carried out by Aichi E13A Jake floatplanes. They were a development of the E12A two-seat seaplane. Powered by a 1,080-hp Mitshubishi Kinsei 43 14-cylinder radial piston engine, the Jake had a cruising speed of 137 mph at 6,560 feet and a range of 1,229 miles. Armament consisted of a .303 Type 92 machine-gun on a trainable mount. Up to 551 lb of bombs could be carried and a Type 99 20mm cannon could also be mounted. They entered service with the Japanese Navy in late 1941.
