Torpedoman First Class Huffman, George

Torpedo Boat Squadron One was being loaded aboard the tanker Ramapo at the Navy Yard for shipping to the Philippines and some of her boats were still in cradles on the quay when the Japanese attacked. Ensign Niles Ball gave orders for the air compressors which powered the .50 caliber machine-gun turrets to be started, but the ships on the dock could not comply as they had no fuel in their tanks. George Huffman and Gunner's Mate First Class Joy Van Zyll De Jong (De Jong, Joy Van Zyll) on PT 23 found they were able to turn the turret by hand and opened fire on the attackers, claiming a hit.
