The destroyer Henley was one of three sister ships of Helm, all of the same specification, moored north of Ford Island in East Loch on 7 December. When the attack began her senior officers were ashore and at about 0830 she was under way with Lieutenant Francis Fleck in command. She was strafed as she passed Hospital Point and returned fire. She claimed a kill in that action and another for an aircraft fired on near the harbor entrance, as well as reporting a submarine contact. Her missing officers were restored to her at about noon. They had got a ride on another ship and when she slowed to search for submarines, doing only about five knots, Henley put a life raft over the side on the end of a line onto which, having jumped overboard, her officers climbed and the raft was hauled back to the mother ship.
