"Harper, John "
The damage control officer aboard West Virginia was John Harper. His ship was severely damaged by torpedoes, high-level bombing and dive-bombing and developed a list which, if she was not to capsize, had to be corrected. He was in central station, deep within the ship, when water began to pour down the trunk leading to his position, so the port watertight door was closed. Then they heard hammering from the other side and shouts to say that the water was coming up around them. Harper knew that to open the door would flood central station, the control room. He ordered the men to work round to the starboard door which was not yet leaking water, but they never heard from the trapped men again.
