Haleiwa Field

47th Pursuit Squadron was temporarily based at Haleiwa Field, near Waialua Bay on the north-western coast of Oahu. Two pilots, Second Lieutenants George Welch (Welch, George) and Kenneth Taylor (Taylor, Kenneth) were at their permanent base, Wheeler Field on the morning of 7 December when the First Attack Wave struck. They telephoned Haleiwa to have their P-40 Warhawks readied and drove over, pursued by Aichi D3A1 Vals which strafed the field, the only attack made on the little used airfield that day. Not only Welch and Taylor, but a number of other pilots of the 47th got airborne to fight the Japanese.
