The minesweeper Grebe was moored inshore of the light minelayer Sicard at the Navy Yard on 7 December. When the First Attack Wave hit it was found that she was virtually unarmed. The log records that there was ammunition for the 11 Springfield rifles, 1906 model, and for the six US Navy pistols, but that for the .30 caliber Lewis machine guns had been turned in. Men were sent to find it, but the attack passed without their being able to fire a shot.
