Dale

The destroyer of the Farragut class, No. 353 Dale, was a sister ship of Aylwin and shared the same specification. Dale was laid down at New York Navy Yard on 10 February 1934 and completed on 19 July 1935. On 7 December 1941 she was moored in East Loch and got under way at about 0837. She was slowed by the need to avoid Monaghan, which was engaging the submarine, but was at sea by 0907. Fishing sampans, flying white flags and making for Kewalo Basin, Honolulu, were seen and Dale's skipper, Lieutenant Commander Anthony Rorschach had considerable difficulty in preventing his enraged crew opening fire on the fishermen who were of Japanese origin.
