55th Coast Artillery

The defense of Pearl Harbor from the sea was provided for by Fort Kamehameha which stands south of Hickam Field near Holokahiki Point on the eastern side of the harbor entrance. Here the 5th Battalion, 55th Coast Artillery, commanded by Colonel William McCarthy, had permanently-mounted heavy artillery to combat a seaborn attack, 155mm mobile guns and .30 caliber machine guns. The aircraft hitting Hickam Field overflew the fort and, at 0800 McCarthy became aware of the crisis. He had Captain Ebey (Ebey, Francis) set up the machine guns on mounts at the tennis courts and then ordered the deployment of the 155mm guns on the south-west coast.
